Juan Sebastian Veron to DC United
Published by Mike on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at 6:50 PMThe juice: Goal.com has received word that Argentine midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron will sign with D.C. United when his contract with Estudiantes de la Plata ends in December. While Veron is listed on the roster of Estudiantes de la Plata, he is legally under contract with Chelsea, who had been loaning him out to the club.
The judge: What a great addition for DC United. It is a win-win situation for the club, who had been rumored to be losing some of their superstar power to clubs abroad. Now, if Christian Gomez does end up leaving, United shouldn't miss a beat with their new replacement. And if Gomez decides to say, Lord have mercy - this might be one of the most potent midfields the league has ever seen.
Final thoughts: At first glance, this looks like a move that would put DC United over the top. However, there is some risk in the move. Veron is past the age of 30, and is coming off a dismal transition to Chelsea, in which The Times listed VerĂ³n's move among the 50 worst transfers ever in Premiership history. He has had a controversial past to say the least, but then again so did Cuauhtemoc Blanco. My final verdict is that this will be a good move, as Argentinian players have had a smooth transition to the MLS, and DC United will not be totally depedant on him, meaning he can comfortably settle into a role that maximizes his enduring abilities.
